DIY Nursing Bra
Finding a good nursing bra is often difficult. They are either not supportive enough, or they are binding. Forget even trying to find your size if you have slightly larger than average breasts! So, this tutorial came out of necessity and combines both comfort and function. We are going to very simply alter a ready-made bra. (You CAN do this!)
First, choose your favorite fitting bra, and then gather a few sewing notions:
Hand sewing needles, a hem ruler, pencil, elastic, 2 bar clasps, and a pair of scissors
Find a comfortable place on the front strap for opening. Measure so it will be even on each side. Mark and cut.
Zigzag stitch raw edges to prevent fraying.
Measure from beginning of side wire (or the spot on side, even with where baby needs access ) to the front strap cut. Cut 2 pieces of elastic 3/4″ shorter than that measurement. (if using ribbon instead of elastic cut these pieces 1/2″ longer than the measurement.)
Pin one end of the elastic (or ribbon) just beyond the side wire or even with baby access on the inside of bra. Pin the other end to 1/2″ from cut back strap inside.
Zigzag stitch to secure both ends.
Hand stitch skirt/pant enclosures (aka Bar Clasps) to both cut ends - The hook on the inside of the front end and the catch on the outside of the back strap end.
The most comfortable nursing bra I have ever had!!

Oh my goodness I’m going to have to try this before I shell out $50 on a new nursing bra. I wonder if I can take the clasps from my old worn out bras in order to make a new one, well I know what my craft for the week will be : )

Great idea! I hate that all my nursing bras don’t fit right and I’ve tried on every kind I can find. This is a wonderful alternative to suffering in a poor-fitting bra.

Excellent post!The tips are also very useful regarding Nursing Bras .A well-fitting nursing bra provides support to the breasts and helps to maintain breast shape.This is the best way to get one that fits!

I did this with the bathing suit hooks too. Same concept, just made a loop on the cut end, so that I could thread the bathing suit hook in. Kept the elastic too! Going to make some of these for my daughter soon. Did this about 5 years ago with my youngest. With my victoria secret bras!
