How Big is a Twin? Queen? King?

The first thing you’ll need to know when deciding to make your own coverlet or sheets is the actual size of your bed.

Using BED SIZE = Width by Length in Inches,

TWIN = 39 X 75
TWIN XL (popular in dorms) = 39 X 80
FULL (Double) = 54 X 75
QUEEN = 60 X 80
KING = 76 X 80

Obviously the widths require a little bit of tailoring to get the right size for your bed, but one might be tempted to assume that all beds are the same length.  As you can see above, this generalization is not true. So, the length also needs to be of special consideration for a good fit. Finally, we need to consider depth. How long do you want your coverlet to hang down over the sides of the bed? Since mattress depths vary widely, measure from the top of your mattress toward the floor making note of how much you’ll need to extend your measurements on the 3 sides (It’s not going to hang down on all 4 sides, is it?).   =)
