Custom (sort-of) Grass Skirt

The newest creation, or modification, was for my daughter’s 9th birthday party.
I have to be honest – I thought it was an incredibly simple idea, but the mommy’s insisted I share.
She really wanted a Hawaiian Luau theme because of the grass skirts. (???) At her age, I was racking my brain trying to figure out how exactly to do grass skirts. They are available, pre-made, as one-size fits all in either child or adult. Which child, and which adult? Some of her girlfriends are tall, some shorter than she, and some are thinner, some thicker…there was no way a “one size fits all” pre-made grass skirt was going to fit. So…I decided to use a pre-made table apron (the kind you staple to the edge of the table as a decoration ) to “make” custom grass skirts.
As the girls entered, we measured around each of their waists (one at a time) beginning with the end of the apron (skip the measuring tape), cut – with a little extra room for overlap, stuck pre-glued hook & loop tape near the raw edges, and wa-la!
If the skirt was too long, we simply cut off the excess length.
Grass skirts made to fit! Simple, custom, economical, and oh-so-fun!
